As most of you know my husbands a DPS officer for the state of Texas. He absolutely loves his job, which makes me feel good knowing that he enjoys going to work everyday. Well, one of the perks of being a DPS officer is not just taking people to jail, but helping others.
Pictures from last year (But you get the point)
Yesterday, as Andrew was driving down the highway he noticed a young man walking along side of it, so he stopped. After patting him down for weapons (you can never be too careful) and finding only 20 cents (which is all the guy had as far as money), he asked the young man how old he was and what he was doing walking down the highway. The guy told Andrew he was 19 and trying to make his way to Little Rock, AR and had come to Texarkana, TX from Long View, TX by hitch hiking, with just a light jacket on and a backpack of his possessions. Andrew then asked him why he was making his way to Little Rock. The guy said, because my mom left me and my brother moved in with his girlfriend and didn’t want me around, and the only person that does want me is my grandma who lives in Little Rock. My heart just melted for the guy. The people who should love him the most abandoned him. Andrew quickly made a call to a guy who is a minister at a nearby church who helps people out in situations like this, and the minister was more then willing to help. The minister was able to provide a meal for this kid who hadn’t eaten in a while and a bus ticket to Little Rock. How awesome! After the phone call to the minister, Andrew broke the good news to this guy, who was very appreciative. Andrew said the guy started crying when he told him, which in return brought me to tears. What a good feeling it must have been to that young man knowing that he didn’t have to walk the rest of the way to Little Rock (which is another two hours by car and who knows how much longer by foot) in this cold weather. I ask Andrew if it made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside for helping a guy like that, and of course his response was, well yeah! Like I didn’t know that his response would be yes. HAHA! I guess that’s a girl for you, you know, wanting to know the feelings side of things.
I just wanted to share that story with you all, being that it’s almost Christmas and really that’s what Christmas is about, giving and in return not expecting anything.
